“In the 1920s, Kondratieff put forward a ‘long wave’ thesis suggesting that long-term economic change could be viewed as a series of repeating business cycles consisting of growth then decline. Although regarded as highly controversial at the time – the Institute where he worked in Moscow was closed down, and Stalin sent him to Siberia –- his work proved to be very influential (Morgan, 1990). Kondratieff’s article ‘The Long Waves in Economic Life’ was translated into English in the 1930s (see Kondratieff and Stolper, 1935).
Schumpeter (1939) saw the power of the repeating pattern that Kondratieff had identified earlier. He explained the pattern as being a result of the relationship between technological innovation and business activity. This relationship resulted in ‘long business cycles’ or ‘Kondratieff waves’ that appeared to repeat every fifty or sixty years. Each wave represented the rapid opportunities for economic growth that a technological innovation initially offers and then the subsequent economic decline with the same technological maturation.”
